Training, qualifications & experience
Tom Trainer (Partner and Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales): I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992 with BDO Stoy Hayward, one of the largest firms of Chartered Accountants in the UK. After qualifying, I moved into the world of commerce, becoming UK Financial Controller of AIG, the world's biggest international insurance company at the time, and In 2004 I set up Chartered Accountant Online, to meet the accounting needs of small businesses and individuals.
I rarely wear a suit, and I won't talk to you in accounting jargon (unless you want me to). Unusually for a Chartered Accountant, I don't have a posh accent. On the other hand, I will take the time to find out what accounting software and business processes are right for you and/or your business to ensure your accounting and tax needs are met in the simplest, most efficient and cost-effective manner. My aim is to make your life easier by streamlining your business and taking away the burden of your accounting.
"Tom Trainer (Chartered Accountant Online) has been our accountant for the last ten years. Being in the bar-restaurant business we do not work normal office hours. Tom understands our business and makes himself available at evenings and weekends when we need him to. His use of technology means he is available for on-line meetings or to log in to our accounting system at very short notice to resolve problems for us. Tom has implemented two accounting systems for us, with full support and training for staff. Last year he helped us through a critical and very difficult situation with HM Revenue and Customs, achieving a result that everyone had thought impossible. I cannot stress strongly enough how important it was that he achieved a much better than expected result for us at that time." Don Cameron, Managing Director of Zebrano Bars, West End bar-restaurant chain
"I'm a general surgeon and I called upon Tom Trainer (Chartered Accountant Online) for his services some 8 years ago. I was quite behind in my taxes and always filed late and was suffering penalties. I work in the NHS and have a private practice, plus I own more than one property just to complicate matters. Tom sorted out the back log, managed to reduce the penalties and prevent any more. In essence he got me back on track and keeps me that way. Now I don't have concerns about my financial affairs and taxes, I know they are in capable hands." Simon Harris, General Surgeon, Clapham, London
"Chartered Accountant Online noticed I had been taxed on a redundancy payment which should have been tax free. The Inland Revenue refused to accept that they were wrong, but Chartered Accountant Online took charge of the entire process, including attending the Tribunal hearing to represent me against the Inland Revenue. Chartered Accountants Online successfully argued against every argument put by the Inland Revenue and we won the case. It did not even cost me anything as Chartered Accountant Online reclaimed all their costs from the Inland Revenue." Dr. J. Clinton, Project Manager, Muswell Hill, London
"Tom was always exceptionally helpful in all financial matters relating to our important charity operations. Business was carried out in an effective and efficient manner to help fulfil the necessary demands of our financial commitments in terms of staff and the Charity Commission." Nigel Thorne, Chairman of Samaritans Enfield, Haringey and Barnet.
Sample Case Studies
AL, a growing business with £4m turnover suffered cash-flow problems and HMRC were threatening to send in bailiffs to seize all the assets, effectively closing the company permanently. Chartered Accountant Online negotiated an 18-month payment plan and two years later the company is still operating profitably.
SD, owner of a photography business, spent some time in hospital and was unable to chase up unpaid invoices for many weeks. When she got out of hospital, a Corporation Tax payment and a VAT payment were due. Chartered Accountant Online liaised with HMRC and arranged payments by instalment with no late-payment interest or penalties.
BH, a film location manager, was very disorganised, and always lost his bank statements. Chartered Accountant Online set him up with an online accounting system that imported his bank statements automatically, leaving him to simply allocate them to the correct income or expense category. He never had to touch a bank statement again, let alone remember where he had put them!
MK, a freelance event organiser, was unhappy with her accountant as he was very hard to contact and could not provide proper records of his work. Chartered Accountant Online set her up with an on-line accounting system which issued and tracked all her sales invoices and expenses. When she has any questions, Chartered Accountant Online can log straight into her accounts from the office and answer them there and then, without even needing a meeting.

The cash back can be 25%-33% of the amount spent.
